Galactic Squad Trailer

1950 Effects Artists

Filmatic Mastermind, Lawrence Flowers put together his own special effects team to create the incredible look of the futuristic science fiction serial. Robert Blaes, a former inventor/appliance repairman, along with Johnny Buechler, a young aspiring special effects artist were responsible for the wondrous and exotic sets featured in the futuristic series.

Blaes and Buechler also built and operated the futuristic space crafts, robots, and miniature landscapes designed to transport the viewers 30 years into the future. Galactic Squad's special effects literally “wowed” everyone when it premiered in 1952.

Robot Monkey and Mergatroid received much controversy due to the fact they were played by child actors. Effects artist Robert Blaes commandeered his 2 daughters Lily and Caitlin to play the Galactic Robots because, “They were the only ones that could fit in the outfits and they were handy on set.  They were always running around and it was easier than baby sitting”.

Johnny Buechler eventually left the team and stated “I just can’t handle Robert’s beer drinking and cigarette smoking any longer”. Buechler went on to work in Hollywood and supplied visual effects for classic films like “W.A.T - The Winobian Atomic Termite”, “Spiders, Spiders, Spiders” and “Nightmare on Alton Street”.
