Inspiring The Future Of Sci-Fi
“I was eight years old when Galactic Squad hit the screen. From the moment I saw the opening titles I was completely sucked into this show and swept away with the Galactic team. All I can say is if it wasn’t for Galactic Squad there might not have been Star Wars. Yes, it had that kind of impact on me.”
- George Lucas
“My friends and I actually built our own Condor Space Rocket out of cardboard boxes. I was Jimmy Electro....ya, piloting that ship, battling space aliens and bad guys. That was awesome fun.”
- Steven Spielberg
“When a 14 year old boy experiences something like Galactic Squad...it changes him. That was me. I actually started writing space adventure stories at a young age because of that show. One of those stories went on to become BG (Battlestar Galactica). You can see a lot of subtle influences in it. I modeled Muffit after Robot Monkey. That show had it all.”
- Glen A. Larson
“Captain Kirk is Lance Neutron. (laughs) I was 30 years old when Galactic Squad came out and it blew me away. I actually tried to get hired on with the production, but it didn’t work out...man, everyone wanted in on it. It kept inspiring me through the years and then Star Trek emerged. This was MY space adventure team!”
- Gene Roddenberry

The Real Back Story
“The lack of a large budget should not be a reason that keeps an imaginative group from being creative.”
A Word or Two From Director Buddy James Gregson:
We used the fact we had limited funds as an opportunity to use our heads. I loved the old black and white shows like Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon and Commando Cody. I was aware of Ed Wood but Tim Burton’s film really peaked my curiosity and I started researching the genre.
My philosophy was that these productions were wonderful in all of their cheesiness because many times these companies didn’t have allot of money, technology or time. I started asking the question "what could we do with no money that would be a ton of fun and could pay homage to these past works of …err… art?"
Pat and I had been tossing around the idea of doing an old black and white Flash Gordon/Ed Wood style short for fun. We looked at some short scripts and a friend of ours, Jeff wrote a one-page piece joking around. I got such a kick out of it that I ran with the concept and in just a few days we had enough of a ridiculous script to start pre-unproduction. Pat started making ships from junk around our special effects studio (not to mention local dumpsters) we proceeded to pull out the fishing line, some beer and fireworks. Not always a good combination but in this case… hey it’s Galactic Squad!
The first things we shot were some miniature scenes while the costumes and props were being finalized. One of the things that I remember most is Pat bringing me these wonderful space age works of art. It was the first time I’ve ever had to look at something I loved and say, “It’s too good, cheapen it up”. He would run off and come back 30 minutes later with something ridiculous and I laughed every time, “That is so bad it’s great… I love it!”
